The Orthodox Metropolitan of Italy, His Eminence Polycarp (Ecumenical Patriarchate) met with His Holiness Pope Francis on 22 May at the Vatican. During the meeting, discussions focused on cooperation between the two Churches.

Following the meeting with the Pontiff, His Eminence The Most Reverend Polycarp, the Orthodox Metropolitan of Italy and Exarch of Southern Europe gave an interview to vaticannews.va in which he outlined the main objectives of the diocese he oversees. According to His Eminence The Most Reverend Polycarp, contributing to the ecumenical dialogue already established between the two Churches is one of the key purposes of his mission. The hierarch specified that “The journey of Catholics and Orthodox towards full unity is on track, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and is moving towards the finish line. I believe that, at the level of the faithful, this goal has already been reached, and that it is more important than at the institutional level”.


His Eminence The Most Reverend Polycarp was elected Metropolitan of Italy on 14 January, 2021 and installed on 11 March.
